Murderous Maths

After doing 5 years of Singapore Maths,
I finally got fed up with its slow pace and all the repetations,
a few months ago I started to turn my attention to living maths.
.
I decided to use the books in Murderous Maths series
by Kjartan Poskitt.
.
Since we stopped at Algebra in Singapore Maths,
so I continued with Algebra using The Phantom X.
I prepared some worksheets to go along with the book.


And some extra sums to do,
got them from Singapore Math Secondary 4.
.
I am surprised that with the correct book and method
even an 11 year old can do mathematic much higher than her grade.

I stopped after finishing quadratic equation,
I wanted to keep the graph-drawing later.
.
.
Now we are using Savage Shape,
there is no calculation in this book,
all we do is draw with set squares and compass.

Here XP drew triangles in semicircles
to show that the angles are always 90 degree.

"Drawing" a semicircle with the 90-degree angle of a set square.

another method to multiply

In the book "The Secret Life of Math",
(click here for my earlier blog post about this book)
a few ways of multiplying is introduced,
this is one we really like.
.
Let's try something simply like 45 x 78
.
Since both numbers are in tens,
so we need two boxes at each sides
which altogether makes four boxes.

.
Write 45 across at the top and 78 down on the right
or vice versa.

.
In each box, draw a slanted line from top right to bottom left
and continue drawing it out of the box.
Do the same with all the boxes.
.
Now is time to do the calculation.
4 x 7 = 28,
write the answer in the box with the TEN (2) on top and UNIT (7) below.
.
Repeat this step with all the numbers.
.
Plus the numbers follow the SLANTED boxes,
in this case, the number is 0
.
5 + 4 + 2 = 11
.
Leave the UNIT at its place,
move the TEN to the next line.
.
3 + 8 + 3 + 1 = 15
leave the 5 at its place and move the 1 to the next line.
.
2 + 1 = 3
.
The answer is 3510

history of mathematic

We are now doing history of mathematic using
.
I bought this book from Book Depository because it's cheaper
compared to other online bookstores
(free shipping worldwide).
.
There are at least one hands-on every chapter.
Here is a Native American-styled "animal skin" tally marks.
(we didn't do the chicken bone tally stick, our cat ate the bone!!)
.
This is an Inca Quipu.
(count and add-on with knots)
.
While reading this book to XP,
she drew this picture.

When there are only a few mini books,
instead of putting them in a lapbook
I choose to paste them onto a thick big book.
.
.
This is a page on four-sided shapes,
with shapes in envelopes and explanations at their side.
.
.
Shapes are made of cardboard.

Sometimes XP didn't do mathematic for a month,
sometimes she did a month's work in one day.

triangle lapbook

Lately I discovered living math and trying to put it into our lesson,
this is my first attempt.
.
We were doing triangle,
although there were clear pictures and explanations in the textbook,
XP still not quite understand.

So we made this simple lapbook on triangle.

A pocket with a card in it
showing how the angles in a triangle make a straight line.

Right angle triangle,
showing the other 2 angles make a right angle too.
.

Equilateral triangle,
showing all sides and angles are equal.
.
.
.
.
Isosceles triangle,
showing two sides are equal.
.
.
.
.
Then I figured that out of the 5 Platonic Solids,
3 are made out of equilateral triangles,
so I decided to put them in this lapbook too.

And the most important is
this is the first time in 2 years that
